The goal
Our goal was to support the successful completion of a 180-day film production in Cape Town during the lockdown. This required managing logistics, ensuring health and safety for all crew members, and providing seamless operations under strict lockdown restrictions without compromising the creative vision of the production.
The challenges
- Lockdown Restrictions: The lockdown regulations imposed strict limitations on movement, gatherings, and public venue access, challenging our ability to carry out a large-scale film production.
- Ensuring Health and Safety Compliance: Following local and international health guidelines for COVID-19, we needed to ensure a safe working environment for all crew members, which included testing, quarantine measures, and PPE provisions.
- Logistical Adjustments: Due to border closures and supply chain delays, managing on-time delivery of equipment, set materials, and other essentials became a pressing issue.
- Maintaining Production Quality: Despite the limitations, it was crucial that the production quality remained high, with each scene capturing the intended artistic and aesthetic elements.
Strategies & Solutions
- Alternative Filming Locations: To stay within restrictions, we secured multiple private and remote locations within Cape Town that minimized public exposure. This included private estates, remote beaches, and isolated natural settings, which provided controlled, safe environments for filming.
- Comprehensive Health Protocols: Partnering with health and safety experts, we implemented stringent COVID-19 measures. These included pre-production quarantines, routine testing, on-site temperature checks, and PPE for all personnel. Additionally, a dedicated medical team was stationed on-site to handle any health concerns.
- Localized Sourcing: We relied on local vendors for equipment, catering, and set supplies to avoid international shipping delays. This approach not only reduced lead times but also supported local businesses during a challenging economic period.
- Remote Collaboration Tools: For team members unable to travel, we set up virtual workspaces and communication channels to keep decision makers updated on production progress. Remote monitoring tools allowed decision makers to view filming in real time, facilitating seamless collaboration.
- Enhanced On-Set Adaptations: To maintain production quality, we utilized drone technology for aerial shots, creative lighting setups for nighttime scenes, and a reduced crew to ensure social distancing. These adjustments allowed us to preserve the film’s visual integrity and artistic direction.

Impact
- Smooth Project Completion: The production was completed within the 180-day schedule, meeting all creative and operational goals while adhering to health guidelines.
- Zero COVID-19 Incidents: Our rigorous health protocols led to zero cases of COVID-19 among the crew, ensuring everyone’s safety and allowing filming to proceed without interruptions.
- Cost and Time Efficiency: By sourcing materials locally and optimizing virtual collaboration, we minimized delays and additional expenses, staying within budget and timeline.
- Creative Excellence Maintained: The production achieved the intended high-quality visuals and artistic standards. The creative adaptations we implemented, like drone shots and enhanced lighting, were well-received and added unique visual value to the film.
